Small group activities
Literacy: (20 minutes)
Magazine Letter Hunt
Beginning: Today for small group, we’re going to be looking at old magazines and flyers from supermarkets.
Middle: Look in a magazine for letters you know. Highlight them, cut and paste them on a paper to create a collage.
· I wonder how many ‘L or name any other letter’ you have found?
· You can say ”Oh, I found my letter” (Your child will be encouraged to find his/ her own)
· Acknowledge your child’s work by stating what they are doing.
· Offer your child scissors, allow them to cut what they want and place them in a bowl or basket.
· Ask your child, “What do you think we can do with these letters?”
· Offer them a glue stick and a piece of paper.
End: Give your child a 5 minutes warning to end the activity.
Math: (5 minutes)
Count the number of steps you take from your room to the kitchen.
Fine motor skills: (10 minutes)
Making play dough:
Playdough ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour.
- 3/4 cup salt.
- 4 teaspoons cream of tartar.
- 2 cups lukewarm water.
- 2 Tablespoons of vegetable oil (coconut oil works too)
- Food coloring, optional.
Mix and knead until consistent in texture.
Beginning: Today we will be working with play dough. I wonder what you will make with your chunk of play dough?
Middle:
Imitate what your child is doing by stating their work. Use words as ‘big, small, mold, fold, hard, soft, twist, pat, roll.’
End:
Give your child 5 minutes warning to end the activity and start cleaning up.
Let your child know that the play dough will be preserved in a zip lock bag or a container
for when they want to get back to it later.
Dance and movement: (3 minutes)
